Conference Information

How will it all end for the human race and the creation?  Eschatology or “the last things” explores the meaning of life beyond death and is the ground of hope for faith.  Sadly, the Christian West often sees the end times in terms of judgment and penal satisfaction,
where some are saved and the rest go to hell.  The popularity of the Left Behind series is one current popular expression of this. This Conference asks whether this is the biblical view of hope and good theology while presenting an alternative paradigm that is good and gracious news.

Speakers and topics are:

Rene Girard   “Eschatology and the Mimetic Theory”

Rene Girard, member of the prestigious French Academy, and emeritus Professor of Stanford University.  Girard is the author of a number of ground-breaking books including Violence & the Sacred, Things Hidden from the Foundation of the World and Evolution and Conversion.

John D. Caputo “The Deconstruction of Eschatology” and  “The Eschatology of Deconstruction”

John D. Caputo is the foremost American interpreter of French deconstructionist Jacques Derrida.  Dr. Caputo’s books include The Weakness of God and What Would Jesus Deconstruct? He currently teaches at Syracuse University.

Barbara Rossing teaches at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago and is the author of The Rapture Exposed.

Ted Grimsrud  “Biblical Apocalyptic: What is Being ‘Revealed’?” and “Reading the Bible in Light of the Lamb's War”
